Generally a light brown colour when dry it will develop to a darker brown colour over a few weeks once submerged. This type of driftwood will often develop a clear to white fungus looking substance within the first few weeks of being submerged. Relax, it is nothing to be concerned about and it is simply a natural type of biofilm that commonly occurs with this type of driftwood. It will not harm your livestock and it will disappear on its own if left alone. Alternatively you can simply remove it by gently scrubbing with a tooth brush while you siphon it out during a water change.
